Significance
of the School Pin

(seen above on the left)

The cup or chalice represents medicine. The serpent has long been famed as a symbol of wisdom and has held a prominent place in the folklore of ancient countries. It was sacred to Aesculapius, the God of Medicine.

It is told that Aesculapius came in the form of a serpent to Rome and drove out a plague which infested the city. Its association with the cup is probably derived from the figure of Hygeia, Goddess of Health (in mythology, a daughter of Aesculapius).
She is represented feeding a serpent from a dish.
